Among the « barrel » wines, my favorite was Château Moulin Haut-Laroque of Fronsac. A family vineyard, the estate consists of 15 hectares of vine that grow on the slopes of several hills on the highest plateau in Fronsac.
The family vineyard grow grapes on chalky clay soils is what makes great wines, as in the example od St.Emilion hill nearby with same formation. Estate proudly represented 2009 rouge that was 65% Merlot, 20% CF, 10% CS and 5% Malbec. Deft blending is key with this medium-body, layers of black/red fruits, tobacco, dirt, smoke and grippy tannin that was crying out for additional 2-3 years of cellaring before showing its true form. Winner in my book. 94 pts.
